Planckendael Zoo

Planckendael is a zoo, located on the grounds of Planckendael castle in the village district of Muizen, in Mechelen, Belgium. In 1956 the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp (KMDA) bought the Planckendael estate in order to acquire a larger space for animals than what they owned: the city zoo in Antwerp. Planckendael hosts exotic animals like rhinos, bison and various antelope species.

Planckendael also has extensive leisure facilities: For children there is a large separate play area.

ZOO Science highlights the expertise and scientific research of Antwerp Zoo and Planckendael Zoo. Science practiced and applied in our zoos, but also in our research stations abroad, in our lab, under our supervision in universities and, above all, in our zoological research centre the Centre for Research and Conservation (CRC). Since the official start in 2000 the CRC has grown into one of the most advanced zoological research centres worldwide. We aim to create a sustainable back-up population in zoos and we focus on nature conservation in general by focussing on animal welfare, breeding programmes and basic zoology research.
